World Computer Literacy Day was established in 2001 by the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT), an Indian company specializing in skills and talent development. This initiative coincided with NIIT’s 20th anniversary and was designed to address the imbalance in computer usage worldwide. Founded in 1981 by Rajendra Singh Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani, NIIT recognized a critical need to equip more women and children with computer skills after a study revealed that men dominated computer usage globally.
Since its inception, NIIT has expanded its operations to over 30 countries, promoting digital literacy and fostering inclusive access to technology. World Computer Literacy Day serves as a testament to their commitment to reducing the digital divide and empowering underserved communities.
The journey of computers traces back to the early 19th century, when Charles Babbage conceptualized the Difference Engine—a mechanical device capable of performing basic calculations. Unlike earlier tools such as the abacus, Napier’s bones, the Pascaline adding machine, and the Leibniz Wheel, the Difference Engine was revolutionary because it used steam power to automate the solving of logarithmic tables.
