Zoos have a fascinating and ancient history, with early forms known as menageries. These smaller-scale collections of animals were primarily private and served as symbols of power and prestige. Archaeological evidence suggests that one of the earliest menageries was in Egypt around 3500 B.C. Famous historical figures such as Alexander the Great, King Solomon, and King Nebuchadnezzar were known for their impressive collections of exotic animals. Similar evidence of early zoos has been uncovered in ancient China and Rome.

The concept of the modern zoo emerged during the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century, when scientific inquiry and public education became central to societal progress. The first true ‘modern’ zoo was established in 1793 in Paris, France. This trend soon spread to other cities, with London opening its own zoo in 1828. The London Zoo incorporated animals from the historic Tower of London menagerie and officially opened its doors to the public in 1847.

Early modern zoos focused more on displaying animals in small enclosures, akin to living museums. Today, however, zoos strive to replicate natural habitats, educate the public, and contribute to scientific research and species conservation, reflecting their evolution into vital centers for wildlife preservation and environmental awareness.
